Discount Magizines – Where To Find Them?

June 6th, 2009

I’ve always been an avid reader.  I subscribe to over ten (12 to be exact) different magazines in a variety of areas, from gourmet cooking to financial planning to spirituality.  These subscriptions were costing me around $420/yr, which I considered to be a worthy price and was gladly paying…until one day when I was chatting with a friend and she told me she was subscribing to some of the same magazines I was, but at tremendously discounted prices!

Her secret, as it turned out, was to order online from the website Magazines.com.  I browsed the site and found that it carried all but one of the magazines I was subscribing to (a New Age magazine).  I was excitedly calculating what my total savings would be by switching to this website, when a thought occured to me: were there similar sites that also sold discount magizines that were even cheaper than Magazines.com?  I did a google search for “discount magazines” and sure enough, I uncovered several other discount magazines sites after some sifting through of search results:

MagazineDiscountCenter.com

SurplusMags.com

Magazines.com (the one my friend told me about)

What I found was that while one of the sites was selling a couple of the magazines I wanted at the cheapest price, it didn’t have the lowest price for all of the magazines I was wanting to order.  My strategy was to compare prices across all discount magazine websites for EACH of the magazines I wanted to subscribe to, and pick the lowest price for that particular magazine.  I did this for all 11 magazines (I still couldn’t find the New Age one!) and found to my pleasant surprise that I would be saving close to $200 a year on magazine subscriptions (my final total came to $226.08 for all 11 magazines, per year)!  Moreover, all of the sites offer free shipping!

So yes, to say that I was pleased would be an understatement.  I strongly encourage that you check out these sites to start saving on your magazine subscriptions also.

*Update* I later sent an email to all the discount magazine websites I was browsing, to ask whether they could stock that New Age magazine I couldn’t find on their websites, and a couple of them actually said yes and sent my a quote for the price.  I picked the better price and needless to say, it was significantly lower than what I was originally paying for that magazine.
